Bal Tash’rit is a Jewish precept meaning ‘do
not waste’. Guided by this principle, I created a design
methodology that explores high-quality
materials through a sustainable lens. Taking
into account the lifespan of leather and wood,
and reducing leather waste by over 70%
compared to the industry average, this set
of furniture is an exploration of closed-loop
material cycles and scalability that considers
durability enhanced by craftsmanship.
Through this systemic approach, the project
maximises the potential of natural materials
and minimises waste. Using vegetable-tanned
leather, an intricate pattern of interlocking
laser-cut elements forms a modular material
through stitchless assemblage. Combining
carpentry and leathercraft, durable furniture
without hardware or stitching is created as a
proof of concept for this methodology.
